A bundle of asphalt shingles costs about $25 to $60 as material alone, and three bundles make one square (100 square feet of roof), so the shingles for a square cost roughly $75 to $180. Installed on a roof, a square costs several times that: $350 to $850 for the common lines, and more for designer and luxury lines. The gap is labor, tear-off, underlayment and the other parts of a roof that are not shingles. This page keeps the two prices apart, so you can tell which one an estimate or a store shelf is quoting.
Material only and installed are different prices
Two numbers get mixed up online. One is what a bundle costs on a shelf. The other is what a roofer charges per square to supply the shingles, tear off the old roof and put the new one on. Only the second is a price for a roof.
| Price | What it includes | Typical range per square |
|---|---|---|
| Material only | The shingles, and nothing else | about $75 to $180 |
| Installed, 3-tab | Shingles, labor and the rest of the job | $350 to $500 |
| Installed, architectural | Shingles, labor and the rest of the job | $400 to $850 |
| Installed, luxury synthetic | Shingles, labor and the rest of the job | $700 to $1,600 |
The material row comes from the bundle prices in the next section; the installed rows come from Modernize, updated September 1, 2026. These are retail and survey prices, not what any one roofer will charge you. They show the shape of the market, and your estimate decides your price.
HomeAdvisor says labor makes up about 60% of the cost of installing a shingle roof, at $1.50 to $4 a square foot depending on pitch and height, and that removing the old roofing is a further $1 to $5 a square foot (updated June 17, 2026). Fixr puts labor at 50% to 60% of the total (updated January 21, 2026). Shingles are the smaller part of the bill.
What a bundle costs, and what it covers
Shingles are sold in bundles, not one by one. A bundle covers about 33 square feet, a third of a square, which is why three bundles make a square. Owens Corning's environmental product declaration for its 3-tab shingle, valid from June 13, 2025, lists three bundles and 80 shingles per square. Modernize says the same of architectural shingles: about 33.3 square feet a bundle, three to the square. For how to read a quantity on an estimate, see our guide to shingle repair cost, which breaks a bundle down shingle by shingle.
| Source | Price per bundle, material only | Our arithmetic per square (three bundles) |
|---|---|---|
| HomeAdvisor, June 20, 2026 | $25 to $35 | $75 to $105 |
| Modernize, September 23, 2026 (architectural) | $30 to $60 | $90 to $180 (stated by Modernize) |
| Fixr, August 29, 2025 | $66.60 to $333 | $200 to $999 |
The sources do not agree, and the reason is the product. HomeAdvisor's range is the low end of a retail shelf. Modernize's is for architectural shingles. Fixr's range is far higher, and its page does not say how much of it is designer and luxury lines. If you are pricing standard lines, the first two rows are the realistic ones. If a store or a roofer's price sheet shows more, find out which line it is for.
Two cautions. The shelf price is retail; roofers buy through suppliers, and what they pay and charge is their own business. And shingles are not the only material on the roof. Underlayment, starter strips, ridge caps, nails, flashing and vents are separate items, covered in our guide to roof decking and underlayment.
Price by shingle line
Shingle makers sell three broad levels, and the price per square climbs with each.
- 3-tab. A single flat layer, the cheapest asphalt shingle. HomeAdvisor lists 3-tab at an average of $1.50 a square foot and Modernize at $3.50 to $5 installed. The next paragraph explains why those two look so different.
- Architectural. Two layers laminated together; the most common line on new roofs. Modernize gives $4 to $8.50 a square foot installed, HomeAdvisor $3.50 on average and Fixr $5 to $15.
- Luxury and designer. Thicker laminated shingles shaped to resemble slate or wood, and luxury synthetic products. Fixr prices designer lines at $12 to $15 a square foot installed, and Modernize luxury synthetic at $7 to $16.
HomeAdvisor's shingle page lists $1.50, $3.50 and $9.50 a square foot for 3-tab, architectural and luxury synthetic, but does not say whether those figures are material alone or installed; the same page gives $4 to $12 a square foot for the finished job. Treat them as relative prices between lines, not as a price for a roof. Our guides to architectural shingle cost and architectural versus 3-tab shingles cover the two common lines in depth, and synthetic roofing covers the products that are not asphalt.
Per square foot to per square
Roof prices are quoted per square foot, per square, and as totals. Converting is one step, and it is our arithmetic:
| Per square foot | Per square (times 100) |
|---|---|
| $3.50 | $350 |
| $4 | $400 |
| $5 | $500 |
| $8.50 | $850 |
| $12 | $1,200 |
The figure to use is the roof's surface area, not the floor area of the house. Our guide to roof cost per square foot shows how to get from one to the other. For the cost of a whole roof, see roof replacement cost.
How to use these numbers on an estimate
- Find the line and the quantity. A good estimate names the shingle line and the number of squares.
- Divide the total by the squares. That gives an installed price per square to hold against the table above.
- Check that it covers the whole job. If tear-off, underlayment, flashing and ventilation are missing, the price is not comparable.
- Ask what allowance for waste is built in. Cuts at edges, hips and valleys use extra material.
- Be wary of a price that is far below the range. Ask what is missing or which line is being used.
Our guide to comparing roofing estimates goes through the lines of an estimate one by one. To see what each line costs on a roof of your size, use the shingle roof cost calculator; to check the bundle count, use the bundles and squares calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a bundle of shingles?
HomeAdvisor gives $25 to $35 and Modernize $30 to $60 for architectural shingles, material only. Designer and luxury lines cost more.
How many bundles are in a square?
Usually three. Both Owens Corning's data for its 3-tab shingle and Modernize's page for architectural shingles say three, at about 33 square feet each. Other lines may pack differently, so check the product's data sheet.
What is the price of a square of shingles?
As material, about $75 to $180 from the bundle prices above (our arithmetic). Installed, about $350 to $850 for 3-tab and architectural lines, per Modernize.
Why is my estimate so much higher than the shingles cost at a store?
Because it includes labor, tear-off, disposal, underlayment, flashing and the contractor's overhead. Labor alone is about 60% of the cost of a shingle roof, according to HomeAdvisor.
Can I save money by buying the shingles myself?
Shingle material is the smaller part of the bill, so the saving is limited, and who supplies the material can affect the roofer's warranty. Ask the roofer before you buy anything. Roof work is also dangerous, and this page is not an installation guide.
How we got these numbers
HomeAnvil does not yet publish price data of its own. Every figure on this page comes from a published source, read on October 13, 2026. These are survey and retail prices. We could not read the retailers' own shelf prices, because their sites refused our requests, so no brand or product price is given.
