Shingle bundles and squares calculator

Pick your roof’s size and pitch and the shingle line to see about how many squares and bundles an estimate should show, so you can check its quantity line.

How big is the area under your roof? Its footprint, overhangs included, in square feet

How we got these numbers

This page uses the method in our roof replacement cost guide for the roof's area: the footprint times the pitch factor. It divides that by 100 square feet for the squares, multiplies by the bundles a square takes, adds the waste allowance and rounds up to a whole bundle. The 2% to 10% waste band is the one in our bundles guide.

The pitch factors are geometry, calculated for this page: the square root of one plus the pitch squared. They assume every plane of the roof has the same pitch; dormers, valleys and mixed pitches add surface.

  • Low (4 in 12): × 1.054
  • Medium (6 in 12): × 1.118
  • Steep (9 in 12): × 1.25
  • Very steep (12 in 12): × 1.414

The bundles a square takes, each from its guide:

  • 3-tab or standard laminated: 3 bundles a square, from the guide.
  • Heavier laminated: 4 bundles a square, from the guide.
  • Large-format premium: 5 bundles a square, from the guide.
  • Thick luxury: 6 bundles a square, from the guide.

The table counts every roof at a medium pitch. A bundle count on an estimate also covers the ridge cap, starter and other products only if the line says so. Bundle counts are for a square of 100 square feet and are estimates; the maker's data sheet for the line on your estimate is the one that counts.
