A 3-tab shingle roof costs about $3 to $5 per square foot installed, which is $300 to $500 per square (100 square feet of roof). Modernize gives $3.50 to $5 and Fixr $3 to $5. For a roof of 2,000 square feet that comes to roughly $6,000 to $10,000. It is the cheapest asphalt shingle, and it is also the shortest-lived: InterNACHI, the home inspectors' association, lists 20 years against 30 for architectural shingles. Most roofers now steer buyers to architectural shingles, and the choice of 3-tab products has shrunk.
National figures, side by side
| Source | 3-tab, installed, per square foot | Per square |
|---|---|---|
| Modernize, updated September 1, 2026 | $3.50 to $5 | $350 to $500 |
| Fixr, updated January 21, 2026 | $3 to $5 | $300 to $500 (our arithmetic) |
| Fixr, updated August 29, 2025 | $3 to $6 | $300 to $600 (our arithmetic) |
Fixr's figure is for materials and labor together. HomeAdvisor lists 3-tab at an average of $1.50 a square foot on its shingle page, but does not say whether that is material alone or the finished price, and it gives $4 to $12 a square foot for installing shingles of any kind. Because the $1.50 figure is not labeled, we do not use it as an installed price. We do use it to show the relative gap between the lines: on the same page, architectural averages $3.50 and luxury synthetic $9.50.
The two Fixr rows are the same company's pages for different products, a year apart. Where the numbers differ, trust neither as exact. They are national ranges, not what a roofer will charge you.
What a whole roof costs by size
The size here is the area of the roof itself, not the floor area of the house. Our guide to roof cost per square foot explains how to measure it.
| Roof area | $3 to $5 a sq ft (Fixr) | $3.50 to $5 a sq ft (Modernize) |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 sq ft (15 squares) | $4,500 to $7,500 | $5,250 to $7,500 |
| 2,000 sq ft (20 squares) | $6,000 to $10,000 | $7,000 to $10,000 |
| 3,000 sq ft (30 squares) | $9,000 to $15,000 | $10,500 to $15,000 |
Both columns are our arithmetic: each source's price per square foot times the roof area. They ignore everything that changes a real price, such as a second layer to tear off, rotten decking, a steep or cut-up roof and a small job's minimum charge. For a figure at your own size, pitch and material, use the roof cost calculator, or the shingle roof cost calculator to price 3-tab against the other lines.
What is in the price
Labor is the biggest part. HomeAdvisor says labor is about 60% of the installed cost of a shingle roof, and Fixr puts it at 50% to 60%. So switching from 3-tab to architectural shingles changes the shingle line, not the labor. The 3-tab saving is smaller in proportion than the difference in the shingle prices suggests. Our comparison of architectural and 3-tab shingles shows the difference side by side, and architectural shingle cost gives that line's prices.
On the shelf, the shingles are cheaper still. HomeAdvisor gives $25 to $35 for a bundle of shingles, and three bundles make a square. Our guide to shingle prices per bundle and per square separates the material price from the installed price.
Why 3-tab shingles are disappearing
Two things are happening at once. First, the products are fewer. Nearmap, a company that analyses shingles to find matches for repairs, says the number of different 3-tab products available in the United States has fallen 68% in five years, the largest drop of any shingle type. Second, they are harder to match. Nearmap says that in the cases it analysed, the share where no matching 3-tab shingle could be found on the open market grew to 54%. Nearmap's business is matching shingles, so read its figures as one industry source, not a census. It gives no single date on which 3-tab ends.
Some are still made. Owens Corning lists its Supreme 3-tab shingle, and its environmental product declaration for it is valid from June 13, 2025 to June 12, 2030. That document gives three bundles and 80 shingles per square, a 25-year limited warranty, a 60 mph wind resistance warranty and a 10-year algae resistance warranty. The document says to read the actual warranty for its details and limits.
For you, this has two effects. If your roof is 3-tab and a few shingles blow off, an exact match may not exist, which is a concern for repair and for an insurance claim. Our guide to shingle repair cost covers matching. And when you replace the roof, the 3-tab line you want may be narrower in color and brand than it was. Whether a policy pays to replace a whole slope because of a mismatch depends on the policy; this page is not insurance advice, so read yours.
How long they last
InterNACHI lists 20 years for 3-tab asphalt shingles and 30 for architectural, with regular maintenance and normal wear, and notes that hot climates drastically shorten asphalt shingle life. HomeAdvisor gives 15 to 20 years for 3-tab, and Modernize 15 to 20 in its overview and 18 to 20 in its table. Those figures are for typical conditions, not a promise. Our guide to how long a roof lasts covers what shortens and lengthens a roof's life.
When 3-tab still makes sense
- A tight budget. It is the lowest price of the three common lines.
- A house you will sell soon. You pay less for a roof you will not live under for long. Ask a real estate professional how buyers in your area see it.
- A building where looks matter less. A garage or outbuilding does not need a designer roof; see garage roof replacement cost.
- A match for an existing 3-tab roof on an addition. The product must still be available, so ask.
It makes less sense if you plan to stay for many years, if you live where strong wind or hail are common, or if you want the longest warranty. The cheaper roof to buy is not always the cheaper roof to own, so compare the life and the warranty as well as the price.
Frequently asked questions
How much do 3-tab shingles cost per square?
$350 to $500 installed per Modernize. Fixr's $3 to $5 a square foot works out to $300 to $500 (our arithmetic).
How much does a 3-tab roof cost for 2,000 square feet?
About $6,000 to $10,000 at Fixr's range and $7,000 to $10,000 at Modernize's, if the roof itself measures 2,000 square feet. A 2,000 square foot house usually has more or less roof than that, so measure the roof first.
Are 3-tab shingles still made?
Some are. Owens Corning still lists a 3-tab line. But Nearmap reports a 68% drop in the number of available 3-tab products over five years.
Is 3-tab or architectural cheaper in the long run?
Architectural costs more up front and lasts longer. InterNACHI lists 30 years against 20, so the yearly cost can come out close. Compare the warranty and the line on each estimate.
Is 3-tab good enough?
For a short-term or low-budget roof, often yes, if it is installed properly and the warranty is clear. Ask each roofer which line, which warranty and what the wind rating is.
How we got these numbers
HomeAnvil does not yet publish price data of its own. Every figure on this page comes from a published source, read on October 13, 2026:
- Modernize, asphalt shingles, updated September 1, 2026: installed price per square foot and per square, and lifespan.
- Fixr, asphalt roof shingles installation, updated January 21, 2026: the $3 to $5 installed price and the labor share.
- Fixr, architectural shingle roof cost, updated August 29, 2025: the $3 to $6 installed price for 3-tab.
- HomeAdvisor, shingle roof replacement cost, updated June 17, 2026: relative prices per line, labor share, and lifespan.
- HomeAdvisor, attic fan cost guide, updated June 20, 2026: the $25 to $35 bundle price.
- InterNACHI, standard estimated life expectancy chart for homes: the lifespans.

- Owens Corning, Supreme shingles environmental product declaration, valid June 13, 2025 to June 12, 2030, and its Supreme 3-tab product page: product details and warranty terms.
- Figures marked as our arithmetic are a published price per square foot multiplied by 100 or by the roof area.
We will update this page when these sources publish new figures, and the date above will say when.
