Most gutter repairs cost $150 to $650. Modernize and Today's Homeowner both give that range, and HomeAdvisor puts the typical job at $194 to $643, about $400 on average. A small fix, such as a loose hanger or a re-sealed seam, can cost well under $150. A repair that needs a new section on a two-story house can reach the top of the range. Repair is usually the right call while the gutters are fairly new, the damage is limited to a section or two and the wood behind them is sound. When repairs start to pile up, replacing the gutters costs less over time.

What a repair costs, by fault

Different faults cost different amounts. These ranges come from two cost guides that each break the job down.

Repair Modernize (Aug 2026) Today's Homeowner (May 2025)
Leak repair $75 – $200 $120 – $230
Fixing sagging or loose sections $75 – $500 $75 – $300 or more
Adjusting the slope (pitch) $80 – $250 $85 – $250
Replacing a damaged section $210 – $400 not listed
Downspout repair $100 – $300 not listed
Clearing a clog $150 – $350 not listed

The two sources agree closely on the repairs they both list. Fixr's cost page (January 2025) gives a similar picture: small repairs of $218 to $396, with a national average near $307, and budget fixes such as one new hanger or some patching for about $100 or less.

Leaks and sagging are the most common reasons to call someone. Our guide to leaking and sagging gutters explains what causes each, and how a pro decides whether the fix is a reseal, new hangers or a new section.

What changes the price

Material. Modernize's per-foot repair prices run $4 to $8 for vinyl, $5 to $8 for aluminum, $9 to $15 for steel and $20 to $40 for copper. Today's Homeowner's list is similar, with copper starting near $27 and zinc and wood above that. HomeAdvisor gives all-in totals for a repair: vinyl about $135 on average, aluminum $140, steel $160, copper $185 and zinc $235.

Style. HomeAdvisor lists K-style at $8.25 to $15 a foot, half-round at $9.50 to $17 and box gutters at $20 to $50. Today's Homeowner gives a similar order, with box gutters costing the most. Box gutters are built into the roof edge, so repairs are more involved.

Height. HomeAdvisor's averages are about $170 for one story, $330 for two and $500 for three or more. Today's Homeowner gives $150 to $450 for one story and $250 to $650 for two. Taller work needs more equipment and more time, and it is the work least suited to a ladder and a free afternoon.

Seamed or seamless. A seamed (sectional) gutter can have one bad piece swapped out. HomeAdvisor says that with a seamless gutter, a small damaged area may mean replacing the whole run, which pushes the repair price up. Fixr says the same: sectional gutters are cheaper to repair. See seamless vs sectional gutters for how the two compare.

How much is damaged. Today's Homeowner groups repairs by extent: $150 to $300 for minor damage, $300 to $500 for mild damage and $500 to $650 for significant damage.

Labor rates. Modernize and HomeAdvisor both put labor and installation at $4 to $30 per linear foot. Fixr gives professional labor at about $5 a foot, and says a pro may charge $50 to $150 an hour.

Downspout repairs

Downspouts are the part that carries water to the ground, and they fail by bending, separating at joints and clogging. HomeAdvisor gives $5 to $11 per downspout for repair or replacement, and says a typical 200-foot home has about six of them. Modernize puts a downspout repair at $100 to $300. Removing and hauling away a faulty downspout runs about $100 a job, according to HomeAdvisor. Fixr's figure for downspout repair is $20 to $100. We cover downspouts on their own in our guide to downspout costs and extensions.

Repair or replace

Modernize gives a plain test: if a repair estimate is 50% or more of the cost of replacement, many homeowners replace. Two quick checks apply before you reach that number.

Repair usually makes sense when:

  • the gutters are fairly new or in generally good shape;
  • the damage is in one or two sections;
  • sagging comes from loose hangers, not from soft or rotten wood behind the gutter;
  • the same problem hasn't come back year after year.

Replacement usually makes more sense when:

  • the gutters are near the end of their life (HomeAdvisor says galvanized steel and aluminum last about 20 years, copper about 50);
  • several sections are rusted, cracked or pulling away;
  • the fascia board behind them is damaged;
  • you are paying for a repair every year.

Today's Homeowner adds that sagging, peeling paint, rust, separating sections, loose fasteners and pooling water below the gutter are signs that a replacement may be due. Our guide to signs you need new gutters goes through them. Fixr also notes that if you were already thinking about new gutters, a leak can be the reason to go ahead. What gutter replacement costs lists the numbers to compare against.

If the board behind the gutter is rotten, a gutter repair will not hold, because the hangers have nothing sound to grip. HomeAdvisor puts fascia and soffit work at about $10 per linear foot; see soffit and fascia repair costs. And if you are replacing the roof soon, think about timing: new gutters with a new roof explains why.

Who should do the work

Today's Homeowner says simple jobs, such as tightening screws or replacing an end cap, are fine for a handy homeowner on a one-story house with easy access. It recommends a professional for replacing sections, adding a downspout, multi-story homes, structural problems and repeated leaks. Falls from ladders are the main risk with gutter work. If the gutters are above the first floor, or you would be working from a ladder on uneven ground, hire it out. This page does not give DIY steps.

How to judge a repair estimate

  • Ask which fault the price covers, and where. "Fix the gutters" is not an estimate.
  • Ask whether it includes cleaning, since a clogged gutter is often the real cause of a sag.
  • Ask what material and profile the new section is, and whether it matches your existing run.
  • For a seamless gutter, ask whether the repair needs a new section or a whole new run.
  • Get the warranty on the repair in writing, even if it is short.
  • Compare against the whole-house replacement price, and ask the installer for one if the repair is near half of it.

Check any rules from a homeowners association first. Fixr advises doing so before any gutter work, including a small section.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheaper to repair or replace gutters?

Repair is cheaper in the short run, $150 to $650 against a few thousand dollars for a whole-house replacement. If the gutters are old or failing in several places, repairs can cost more over time than a replacement would.

Can one section of gutter be replaced?

On seamed (sectional) gutters, yes, according to Fixr and HomeAdvisor. On seamless gutters, HomeAdvisor says a small damaged area can mean replacing the whole run.

How much does it cost to fix a leaking gutter?

Modernize gives $75 to $200 and Today's Homeowner $120 to $230. A leak at a seam is usually cheaper than a leak caused by a cracked or rusted-through section.

Should I repair gutters before adding gutter guards?

Angi advises repairing or replacing sagging, leaking or damaged gutters before guards go on, according to our gutter guards cost guide. Guards over a failing gutter just hide the problem.

How long do gutters last?

HomeAdvisor says galvanized steel and aluminum gutters last about 20 years and copper about 50.

How we got these numbers

HomeAnvil does not yet publish price data of its own. Every figure here comes from a published national cost guide, read on October 13, 2026. These companies base their ranges on their own research and surveys. Their ranges differ, so we show them side by side. We name no brands of gutter. Angi and HomeGuide block automated reading of their repair pages, so we did not use them.
